Executive Director Delivers Letter to Congressman Brad Sherman on Behalf of MAS and MASF

July 30, 2008

Congressman Brad Sherman
2262 Rayburn House Office Building
Washington, DC 20515-0524
By Fax: (202) 225-5879

Dear Congressman Sherman,

I am writing to you in your capacity as Chair of the House Subcommittee on Terrorism, Nonproliferation and Trade.

The Muslim American Society (MAS) and its civic and human rights advocacy entity, MAS Freedom (MASF), strongly protest the invitation to Steven Emerson to testify tomorrow, July 31st, before your subcommittee.

Mr. Emerson has proven to be both consistently subjective and vindictive in his numerous attacks on Muslim leaders and organizations in the United States. His numerous public attacks on MAS, the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), the Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC), and other major national organizations in the Muslim community, have attempted to perpetuate the myth of our collusion with terrorism and violence, despite overwhelming evidence that these allegations are completely false.

Further, we believe that Steven Emerson, who is a self-described “expert” on terrorism, is hardly capable of providing the objective information required by your subcommittee for a credible assessment of the subject of his presentation: Leveraging Foreign Aid to Achieve U.S. Policy Goals.

We, too, oppose violence and terrorism. We support the goal of your subcommittee to enhance the security of the American people. But we believe that Muslim-bashers like Steven Emerson – who pursue their own political agendas – should not be consulted as “experts” on the topic. His testimony will only likely contribute to the atmosphere of unwarranted prejudice that heaps blanket condemnation upon our entire community.

We ask that this invitation be rescinded, or that you postpone the hearing until a more objective and credible witness is invited to testify. Further, we respectfully request that this formal objection to Mr. Emerson’s invitation to testify be noted in the records of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Terrorism, Nonproliferation, and Trade.

Respectfully yours,

Mahdi Bray
Executive Director
MAS Freedom
