WASHINGTON – A coalition of civil and human rights advocates will hold a press conference on Friday, May 1, 2009, at 9:30 AM to discuss past and present U.S. policy on torture.

The group will also highlight the case of Naji Hamdan, a U.S. Citizen possibly facing trial on alleged terrorism charges in the next two weeks in the Federal Supreme Court of the United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.); rulings from which are not appealable.

Mr. Hamdan’s attorney has indicated that the charges against his client were coerced through torturous interrogation practices with the possible direction and knowledge of U.S. government officials.

MAS Freedom Civil and Human Rights Director, Ibrahim Ramey will serve as moderator at the press conference, which will also include speakers Mahdi Bray, Executive Director, MAS Freedom; Reem Salahi, Attorney, ACLU-Southern California; Attorney Mara Verhayden-Hilliard, Partnership for Civil Justice; Brian Becker, ANSWER Coalition; Reverend Grayland Hagler, United Church of Christ; and Frida Berrigan (or her representative), Witness Against Torture.

“The use of torture to obtain a confession is reprehensible and violates international and US law. Mr. Hamdan’s guilt or innocence should not be determined by information obtained through torture nor should our government be complicit in any acts of torture by a foreign nation,” stated MAS Freedom Executive Director, Mahdi Bray.
