WASHINGTON, D.C. (MASNET) Oct 26, 2009 – MAS Freedom (MASF), as the civic and human rights advocacy entity of the Muslim American Society (MAS), and the nation’s largest grassroots Muslim organization, believes, together with many experts, that some sort of health care reform legislation is likely to become law, possibly before the end of 2009. The implementation of comprehensive health care reform that will provide quality and affordable health care for the more than 47 million people in America without health insurance also happens to be part of MAS Freedom’s 12-Point Legislative Agenda for 2008-2012. However, as both the United States Senate and the House of Representatives debate numerous proposed bills and work to reconcile these proposals in their respective Houses of Congress, one thing is clear: the overwhelming majority of Muslim health care professionals and national Muslim organizations and leaders favor the inclusion of a government-sponsored health care insurance option in the final bill that will be presented to President Barack Obama for his signature.

MAS Freedom is calling on the nation’s Muslim community to join in the demand that the “public option” be included as part of this vital effort to reform the nation’s health care infrastructure. (VIDEO: Citizens Hearing Unites Faith Leaders on Public Option.)

In the final analysis, uninsured Americans need a strong public insurance option that would serve as leverage in the marketplace to drive health insurance premiums lower and protect public consumers from the monopoly character of the present for-profit health insurance industry.

MAS Freedom further believes that such a public option would allow millions of uninsured and under-insured citizens, and persons now excluded from health insurance coverage because of pre-existing medical conditions, to have access to quality health care that is both a moral imperative and a basic human right.

Over the last four months, the U.S. Congress has hosted presentations, briefings, and citizen hearings featuring expert testimony of both Muslim physicians and national Muslim leaders unanimous in the call for a public health insurance option.

The nation’s leading professional Muslim medical organization, The Islamic Medical Association of North America (IMANA), strongly supports a public insurance option, as does the American Muslim Task Force on Civil Rights and Elections (AMT), an umbrella organization representing most major Muslim organizations in America, including MAS Freedom.

Within the estimated community of 40,000 Muslim physicians in the United States, there are strong indications that an overwhelming majority – which includes some of the most acclaimed and prestigious physicians in the United States – supports a public insurance option as well.

Moreover, such a public option would not, as critics charge, create unwarranted intrusion by the government in the right of individuals to choose their own form of health care – private insurance companies would still exist. Consumers would still be able to choose their health care providers, and an available public-sector insurance option would contribute not only to expanded availability of insurance for all Americans, but contribute to the end of insurance monopolies, while slowing down the spiraling cost of health care that, left unchecked, threatens to destroy the viability of the entire national economy.

Because it is both economically necessary and morally compelling, in addition to chairing and supporting important presentations at citizen hearings and participating in mobilizations for health care reform in Muslim community gatherings throughout the nation, MAS Freedom will continue to organize and agitate for this vital component of national health care reform.

But in the final analysis, MAS Freedom calls for the public health insurance option because it is part of our belief, as Muslims, that we should want for our nation that which we desire for ourselves.

Simply stated, the public health insurance option is the best possible health care for all citizens, and all human beings, that our technologically advanced society can offer.

Having available health care insurance for all in America also allows the United States to join every other nation in the “industrial democracies” that considers health care to be a right of their own citizens.

MAS Freedom will continue to support this vital component in the legislative options now before Congress and will continue to lobby for the public option, to encourage support for it in Congress, and to press the uncommitted members of Congress – especially those in the majority party of the House – to abide by the wishes of the clear majority of voters who favor it.

MAS Freedom urges all MAS members, all Muslims, and indeed, all citizens, to send a simple and powerful message to members of the Senate and the House of Representatives; health care reform without a public health insurance option is no option at all.
