PART 2: AMT & MAS Freedom Conduct Interfaith Citizens Hearing on Healthcare Reform on Capitol Hill October 14, 2009

Filed under: Health-Care, Politics — Imam Mahdi Bray @ 12:31 pm

On October 14, 2009 MAS Freedom (MASF), as the civic and human rights advocacy entity of the Muslim American Society (MAS), participated in a Interfaith Health Care Hearing on Capitol Hill, chaired by MAS Freedom Executive Director, Imam Mahdi Bray and sponsored by the American Muslim Task Force on Civil Rights and Elections (AMT), and supported by a coalition of major national Islamic organizations. Organized in continuation of the AMT initiative launched September 15, 2009 with the Muslim Health Care Professionals Hearing on Capitol Hill, Wednesday’s hearing was scheduled in support of its aim to engage and mobilize community members in support of genuine health care reform.

“As people of faith we must continue to fight for a health care bill that contains a public option; without it Americans will continue to fall prey to the tyranny of insurance companies,” stated Bray.

Co-chairpersons at the hearing included Interfaith Worker Justice Executive Director, Kim Bobo; Dr. Jamal Barzinji, Vice President of the International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT); Nihad Awad, Executive Director of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), Naim Baig, Secretary General of the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA), and the Honorable Rev. Walter Fauntroy, former member of Congress and former Pastor of New Bethel Baptist Church.

Panelists from the Christian, Muslim and Buddhist faith communities, including Rev. Louisa Davis, Coordinator, Greater Washington Allies in Reconciliation; Rev. Kaz Nakata of the Ekoji Buddhist Temple, who were joined by MAS Freedom Civil and Human Rights Director, Ibrahim Abdil-Mu’id Ramey; Hilary Shelton, Director, NAACP Washington Bureau; Lavanya Sithanandam M.D., Board Member, South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT); and Asma Hanif, Chairperson of CCMO, Coordinating Council Muslim Organizations and Director Muslimat Al-Nisaa Health & Shelter Organization, presented united testimony in support of lobbying Congress and supporting grassroots organizations pushing for the public option.

Providing an invaluable service in support the public option as a vital part of health care reform were Congressional Representatives Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) and Keith Ellison (D-MN).
