Politics Makes For Strange Bed Fellows

WASHINGTON, D.C. (MASNET) Oct 29, 2009 – MAS Freedom (MASF), as the civic and human rights advocacy entity of the Muslim American Society (MAS), is both shocked and deeply dismayed by the involvement of an openly anti-Muslim agitator in the Virginia electoral contest for Governor of the Commonwealth.

On October 28, the Virginia Public Access Project reported that Republican Party candidate Bob McDonnell accepted a $20,000 campaign contribution from Sheldon Adelson, along with an equal contribution from Adelson’s wife.

Adelson, a major contributor to an organization called the “Endowment for Middle East Truth”, was also a significant influence behind the 2008 video entitled ‘Obsession: Radical Islam’s War Against the West’. This production, widely condemned by Muslims and civil rights advocates, accused Muslims of a widespread conspiracy against the U.S. society and government, and – in the opinion of many viewers – falsely implied that, then-candidate Barack Obama was also a Muslim.

“Although MAS Freedom is a non-partisan organization and does not endorse or oppose specific candidates for elected office, Muslims are both offended and deeply disturbed that a major candidate for Governor of Virginia would accept a significant contribution from someone who is openly hostile to the Muslim community,” stated MAS Freedom Executive Director, Imam Mahdi Bray.

Bray added, “If it is unacceptable for a candidate to receive money from openly racist individuals or groups, it should be no different when a person with a vehemently anti-Muslim agenda provides funds for a any candidate for public office, regardless of that candidate’s political party. We are shocked and dismayed that the McDonnell campaign would accept any contribution from such a morally tainted source.”

MAS Freedom is calling on Mr. McDonnell to repudiate the clear anti-Muslim bigotry of Sheldon Adelson and immediately return his contribution to the McDonnell election campaign.

“Doing so would send a clear signal to the people of Virginia that Mr. McDonnell, and his party, completely reject, and dissociate themselves from, any and all forms of religious bigotry, whether directed against Muslims or any other faith community,” Bray concluded.
