Israel’s Embargo is about Economic Warfare, Not Security

Introduction

The embargo of Gaza – what a humanitarian atrocity! Even worse is the bogus justification for the embargo.  We’ve been told over and over again that the embargo was for Israeli security purposes now we find out through the internal Israeli documents that the real justification is to create economic warfare against the people of Gaza. What a travesty! Check out the piece below.

Quote of the Day: As my grandmother used to say, “You’re doing something dirty and trying to call it clean.”

Israel’s Embargo is about Economic Warfare, Not Security

Despite the fact that spokespersons for the Israeli government and military continue to claim that the economic blockade of Gaza is meant to be measures to protect Israel’s “security,” documents obtained from a McClatchy newspaper investigative reporter indicate that the real motive behind the blockade is something else: economic warfare on the people of Gaza.

McClatchy obtained the government’s written statement from Gisha, the Legal Center for Freedom of Movement, which sued the government for information about the blockade. The Israeli high court upheld the suit, and the government delivered its statement earlier this year.

The blockade, enforced by Israel since January of 2007 in retaliation against Hamas, prohibits an ever-changing list of material from transport into Gaza, including cement for construction purposes, water and electrical infrastructure repair materials, and even food products.

Sari Bashi, the director of Gisha, said the documents prove that Israel isn’t imposing its blockade for its stated reasons, but rather as collective punishment for the Palestinian population of Gaza. Gisha focuses on Palestinian rights.

The issue of “collective punishment” is addressed in international covenants, including the Fourth Geneva Convention, which prohibits the use of “collective punishment” by a belligerent party in a military conflict. It is also illegal for an occupying (or controlling) power to deny basic food items and medical necessities to a population under their control.

This admission by the government of Israel clearly indicates, to the entire world, both the illegality and the immorality of the blockade of Gaza.  And that is another reason why we demand: End the Blockade, and Let Gaza Live.
