MAS Freedom Joins National Day of Action against SB 1070 Immigration Law in Arizona

Filed under: From the Desk of Imam Mahdi Bray — Imam Mahdi Bray @ 4:06 pm

Introduction:  Arizona and its SB1070 Immigration Law is nothing but legalistic language for old fashioned racial profiling. As a Muslim and an African American who has a double whammy of worrying about driving while black and flying while Muslim, I urge  all people of conscience to do all that their utmost to put an end to this racist legislation. For me living through segregation and Jim Crow Laws, Arizona’s SB1070 is deja vu all over again.

MAS Freedom Joins National Day of Action against SB 1070 Immigration Law in Arizona

For the residents of the state of Arizona, Zero Hour will arrive at 12:01 AM on Thursday, July 29th. That is the time when the controversial and highly questionable immigration law, SB 1070, is scheduled to go into effect. But in response to this draconian law, the A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition is mobilizing hundreds of thousands of people throughout the country to demonstrate their adamant opposition to the violation of human rights
and human dignity that will inevitably come with the whole sake targeting of persons who are “suspected” of being in violation of immigration laws.

The legality of SB 1070 is being challenged by the U.S. Department of Justice, Latino immigrant rights groups, and a host of civil rights organizations, including the American Civil Liberties Union.  MAS Freedom is one of the plaintiffs in the ACLU suit. On Wednesday, July 28th, federal judge Susan Bolton dealt a serious blow to the proposed law when she ruled that one particularly controversial part of SB 1070 could not be implemented, and individuals in Arizona may not be questioned about their immigration status while being investigated for other suspected violations of the law.

Throughout the USA, people will march in the hundreds of thousands against SB 1070 to protest any attempt to criminalize immigrants and to resist the targeting and arrest of persons who are suspected by the police of being in the state of Arizona without documentation.

Currently, demonstrations and rallies are scheduled for communities all over the United States, including Los Angeles and San Francisco, California; Homestead, Orlando, Tallahassee and West Palm Beach, Florida; Chicago, Boston, Albuquerque, Syracuse, and Philadelphia.

These protests are also challenging the scapegoating of immigrants in the United States, and the rising tide of racist and political attacks on immigrant communities in the aftermath of the economic downturn in the U.S. economy.
