Quran Burning: It will be stopped!

Filed under: From the Desk of Imam Mahdi Bray — Imam Mahdi Bray @ 3:25 pm

Why is the media giving Reverend Terry Jones the “15 minutes of fame bigot” so much air time? The  real story is how the city of Gainesville has unitied against hatred, bigotry and religious intolerance. Check out the piece below.

Imam Mahdi Bray

Quote of the day:  “You could never burn what God has placed in our hearts. Terry Jones your arms are too short to box with God.”

Quran Burning: It will be stopped!

MAS Freedom secures commitment from officials to stop the Sept. 11 Quran Burning

Washington, D.C. (MASF) Sept. 9th, 2010 -MAS Freedom, the civil and human rights component of the Muslim American Society (America’s largest grass roots Muslim organization) is working with the local Muslim community of Gainesville, Florida and public town officials, to stop the plan of Reverend Terry Jones of the Dove Church plan to burn copes of the Holy Quran on September 11, 2010. The MAS Freedom team of advocates on the ground in Gainesville is working tirelessly to stop the proposed burning and to provide organizational support to the local   Muslim Community.

MAS Freedom, after communicating with a Gainesville law firm and with local public officials, has secured assurances that the city will strictly enforce the municipal fire code in the event that Reverend Jones attempts to ignite a fire on the Dove Church property or anywhere within the city limits.

According to fire chief Gene Prince, “under the city’s fire prevention ordinance, an open burning of books is not allowed.” Gainesville code 10-63, states a “general prohibition on outdoor burning and open burning.” Section 6 specifically outlaws the burning of “Newspapers” and section 7 outlaws the burning “corrugated cardboard, container board, and office paper.”

“The Gainesville community opposition to this proposed despicable act has been overwhelming. There is zero support in the city for Reverend Jones’ bigotry. I truly believe that the real media story is not Rev. attempting to secure his 15 minutes of fame as a bigot, but rather, how the good people of Gainesville have pushed backed against this type of bigotry and hatred,” stated MAS Freedom Executive Director Mahdi Bray, who has just returned from Gainesville Florida after speaking with public officials and, community leaders, and visiting the Dove Church site stated that he and the MAS Freedom staff plan to return to the Dove Church site on September 11th.(Click here to view videos of Bray’s visit.)

Bray further states that “We have received support and encouragement for our work in Gainesville from people as far away as Brazil. A new group started up in New Jersey called Plant a Good Word has also been supportive and crucial to the work that MAS Freedom is dong in Gainesville. They have created a website to educate people about the Quran, and groups like this one keep us optimistic and fully engaged in our work of confronting Islamophobia. Many more groups like this are starting up every day.”

Both MAS Freedom and the local Muslim community of Gainesville encourage Muslims to use September 11th as a day for encouraging  public service and outreach. The local Gainesville Muslim community has expressed their gratitude for the prayers and support that they have received from the American Muslims community and the greater American community at large. But given the security issue, the size of the town and logistical challenges, individuals traveling to Gainesville will not help the cause of fighting Islamophobia, bigotry, and religious intolerance. However, organizing against Islamophobia and bigotry at a community level is a great way to help build a united front against religious intolerance in America.

If your local community is interested in combating Islamophobia and religious prejudice here’s what you can do:

·         Invite MAS Freedom to your mosque or organization to conduct an interactive workshop on combating Islamophobia.

·         Be a MAS Freedom Volunteer simply by contacting us.

·         Make a personal donation to MAS Freedom or assist in arranging fundraising events for MAS Freedom’s campaign to combat Islamophobia, protect Mosques and Religious Freedom.
